Drone Demonstration

Students grades 6-12 were recently invited to a drone demonstration at Herbert Carter Global Community Magnet School. During the demonstration, students were able to explore the opportunities and learning experiences from building, flying, and competing with drones and the real-world application of the newly developed technologies.

While a recent development, the competition of drones provides hands-on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (also called STEM) education to students. Through various programs, Rocket Drones and other robotics groups aim to bridge the gap between athletics and STEM learning, while also encouraging other forms of athletics, which are often coined eSports. With the recent development of eSports, more students are provided opportunities in technology and new forms of competition.

Although many students may see drones as primarily an engineering- and mathematics-related activity, their recent applications often go unnoticed. Through their demonstration, Rocket Drones highlighted the creative applications of technology in fields such as art, videography, and manufacturing. Students learned about the agricultural use of surveillance footage, in sports such as NASCAR or football, or the marketing teams that support these drones in terms of multimedia coverage or maintenance.

Students present at the demonstration were shown how to maneuver drones through racing courses before being given the opportunity to compete against other students and teachers while trying their hand at drone operation.
